Spain Denounces Israeli Attacks on UNRWA Facilities in East Jerusalem
(MENAFN) Spain strongly condemns Israeli forces’ actions against facilities operated by the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) in occupied East Jerusalem, describing the incidents as unacceptable and calling on Israel to uphold international law.
“The Spanish Government categorically rejects these unacceptable violations of the United Nations agency buildings, which are protected by immunities under international law,” a government statement said.
Spanish authorities urge Israel to honor its international legal responsibilities, including those arising from its status as an occupying power, as well as comply with advisory opinions issued by the International Court of Justice.
“The Government reiterates its firm support for UNRWA and the full fulfilment of its mandate, which is essential for meeting the needs of the Palestinian refugee population,” the statement said.
Madrid also stresses that UNRWA’s role remains necessary until “a just and lasting peace is achieved in the region through the implementation of the two-State solution.”
The condemnation comes after Israeli forces forcibly entered and took control of an UNRWA training facility in East Jerusalem. British officials also criticize the move, describing it as “outrageous.”
Israeli forces had evacuated employees from the facility on Tuesday before taking control of the compound and raising the Israeli flag inside its courtyard.
