Netanyahu Privately Admits Likud Could Lose Election
(MENAFN) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told associates in closed-door talks that his Likud party stands to lose the upcoming legislative elections "unless something changes," according to Israel's public broadcaster.
Netanyahu reportedly conceded that his party has already shed 10 seats in current standings, telling those present: "I do not know how to get them back."
The broadcaster said the comments reveal a leader who doubts the more favorable opinion polls circulating about him, and who privately believes Likud's position is weaker than those surveys suggest.
Public polling paints a mixed picture: surveys generally show Likud's support eroding while Yashar, led by Gadi Eisenkot, gains ground — though polls commissioned by groups aligned with Israel's right tend to show friendlier numbers for Netanyahu.
A poll released earlier Wednesday by Israeli media found that if elections were held immediately, Eisenkot's party would capture 24 seats — down two from the channel's survey the previous week. Likud, meanwhile, would fall to 19 seats, a drop from 23 in that earlier poll.
Under those numbers, the opposition bloc of Jewish parties led by Eisenkot would command 57 seats, versus 48 for Netanyahu's coalition. Arab parties would take the remaining 15. Forming a government in Israel requires the backing of at least 61 lawmakers in the 120-seat Knesset.
On the question of who's fit to serve as prime minister, Eisenkot led Netanyahu 46% to 35% in the same poll, with 19% of respondents saying they "do not know."
The general election, set for October 27, is widely viewed as a pivotal moment for Netanyahu's political survival, as he battles accusations of corruption, authoritarian overreach and governing failures.
Netanyahu, 76, has led what analysts describe as Israel's most right-wing government in its history since taking office in late December 2022. He is currently wanted by the International Criminal Court on war crimes charges tied to Israel's military campaign in the Gaza Strip, which began in October 2023.
