Tunisia Swelters as Kairouan Hits 49.8C, World's 2nd-Hottest Spot
(MENAFN) Tunisia baked under an intense heatwave Wednesday, with the central city of Kairouan reaching a scorching 49.8C (121.6F) — the second-highest temperature recorded anywhere on Earth that day, according to an independent monitoring group.
The Tunisian Observatory for Weather and Climate reported that Kairouan's reading eclipsed its previous July high of 49.7C, placing the city just behind Mehran, Iran, which topped the global chart at 50C.
The figure also crept close to Tunisia's all-time national record of 50.3C, set on August 11, 2021, the observatory noted.
The heat wasn't confined to one city — six Tunisian locations landed among the planet's 20 hottest spots Wednesday. Beja hit 49.2C, Jendouba reached 48.1C, both Gabes and Tozeur climbed to 48C, and Zaghouan registered 47.9C, per observatory data.
Compounding the misery, the searing temperatures struck as much of the country faced rolling power cuts. STEG, Tunisia's state electricity and gas utility, said the outages were implemented deliberately to protect the stability and continued operation of the national power grid.
