UN Rushes Aid as Nepal Flood Deaths Hit 160, Hundreds Missing
(MENAFN) Emergency response teams from the United Nations are rushing supplies and staff to flood-ravaged regions of Nepal, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced Wednesday, as the death toll from the disaster continued to climb.
Writing on X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk's company, Guterres said: "I am saddened by the severe flooding in Nepal & China, which has claimed many lives, left people missing, and caused widespread destruction."
The UN chief offered his sympathies to grieving families and wished a swift recovery to those injured in the disaster.
He confirmed that the world body has stepped in to back Kathmandu's relief efforts, writing: "In Nepal, the @UN is supporting the Government-led response. UN teams & humanitarian partners are mobilizing supplies & personnel to support communities affected by the floods."
The scale of the devastation is staggering: officials say the flooding has killed at least 160 people, with more than 680 still unaccounted for.
Infrastructure losses have been severe. Nepalese government figures show 13 hydropower plants destroyed and roughly 25 miles (40 kilometers) of roadway wiped out. Powerful surges of water and debris also swept away close to 200 trucks and toppled 19 bridges.
