Israeli Occupiers Storm Disputed Nablus Holy Site Under Military Guard
(MENAFN) Hundreds of Israeli occupiers stormed the site known as "Joseph's Tomb" in the northern occupied West Bank late Wednesday, escorted by Israeli forces, according to Palestinian media.
The official Palestinian news agency reported that Israeli forces entered eastern Nablus with dozens of military vehicles and a bulldozer to secure the incursion. Troops also fired tear gas at journalists covering the raid and sealed off roads leading into the area, the agency said.
The site sits on the eastern edge of Nablus, a district under Palestinian administrative control, and has long served as a flashpoint for tension between Israeli occupiers and Palestinian residents.
Israeli occupiers maintain the site holds the remains of the biblical figure Joseph, said to have been brought from Egypt and buried there. Palestinian accounts and archaeologists dispute that claim, arguing the structure dates back only a few centuries and instead marks the tomb of a Muslim religious figure named Youssef Dweikat.
Since Israel's occupation of the West Bank began in 1967, the site has drawn repeated visits from Israeli occupiers conducting religious rituals. Despite falling under Palestinian administration, it continues to be stormed regularly by occupiers accompanied by Israeli forces — often under cover of night.
The incursion comes amid a broader escalation across the West Bank, where attacks by the Israeli army and occupiers since the start of the Gaza war have killed 1,183 Palestinians and injured more than 12,000 others, according to official Palestinian figures. An additional roughly 24,000 Palestinians have been arrested during that period, the figures show.
