Hegseth Eyes Spokesman Sean Parnell to Replace Army Secretary Driscoll
(MENAFN) US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is weighing his chief spokesperson and senior adviser Sean Parnell as a potential replacement for Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, who is reportedly considering an exit from the Pentagon, media reported Wednesday.
Citing two sources familiar with the matter, media reported that Parnell is among the names under consideration for the Army's top civilian role — a follow-up to its earlier reporting that Parnell had privately signaled interest in the job.
Asked about Parnell, a senior administration official said he remains "100% focused" on the position he was appointed to by President Donald Trump and Hegseth.
Separately, a Pentagon official and a former administration official with knowledge of internal deliberations said Parnell has landed on Hegseth's shortlist for the post.
“Mr. Parnell has a deep bench of supporters throughout the Administration and has worked tirelessly to enable cultural change and accountability in the Pentagon,” the Pentagon official told media.
The official added that Parnell's background in combat and executive leadership would bring “accountability, change, and engaged transformational leadership” to the Army.
The potential leadership shuffle comes as Driscoll reportedly weighs stepping down following months of tension and an internal power struggle with Hegseth. According to a source familiar with the discussions, Driscoll is considering leaving around Labor Day, though the White House is pushing for him to stay in the role at least through the November midterm elections.
Media first reported Tuesday that Driscoll had visited the White House on Monday to discuss his future.
Parnell has held the role of the Pentagon's top spokesperson since February 2025 and also chairs the Afghanistan Withdrawal Special Review Panel.
