Lebanon Says Negotiations with Israel Offer Path to Southern Goals
(MENAFN) Lebanese President Joseph Aoun says dialogue with Israel is the only viable way for Lebanon to achieve its objectives in the south, including ending the occupation of Lebanese territory and expanding the presence of the national army in the area.
Speaking during a meeting with representatives of Lebanon’s Maronite Church, Aoun says these aims cannot be secured through another war and that negotiations were chosen to prevent further destruction and suffering.
He acknowledges that the talks are expected to be difficult and lengthy, but argues that pursuing negotiations remains preferable to renewed conflict.
“We agree on the same goals: liberating the south, deploying the army to the [international] border, recovering prisoners, and enabling residents to return and rebuild,” he said.
These objectives, he added, “cannot be achieved through war, as has become clear, so there is no option but negotiations.”
Aoun also addresses his government’s economic agenda, saying Beirut is working to implement financial and economic reforms while confronting years of widespread corruption.
He says the authorities are “fighting a war against those who reject the logic of the state.”
