TRNC Criticizes Efforts to Block Barcelona Training Camp

(MENAFN) The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) criticizes attempts by the Greek Cypriot Administration to stop Spanish football club Barcelona from holding a training camp for young players in the north of the island.

TRNC President Tufan Erhurman says he has observed numerous efforts on social media aimed at preventing the event from taking place. He argues that the Cyprus dispute should not prevent young people on either side of the island from accessing opportunities available to their peers elsewhere.

"You may call getting the festival canceled and trying to prevent children from playing football a diplomatic victory, but from a humanitarian perspective, it is clear to me that this is a defeat for all people and for humanity," Erhurman said in a statement.

He also urges that sporting and youth activities remain separate from political disputes, recalling previous appeals from UN, EU, and Council of Europe institutions for the isolation of Turkish Cypriots to be brought to an end following the 2004 developments.

Barcelona plans to hold the youth training camp in the TRNC on Sept. 11.
