Fatal Small Aircraft Crash Leaves Two Dead in Piedmont
(MENAFN) Two people are killed after a small aircraft crashes near a dam in Italy’s northern Piedmont region, according to local authorities.
The incident occurs at around 11:30 a.m. local time in Antrona Schieranco, close to the Campliccioli dam.
The two occupants, a 64-year-old engineer from Premeno and his 63-year-old friend from the Milan area, die at the scene, according to reports.
The aircraft is believed to be an autogyro, a rotorcraft that moves forward through engine-powered thrust while its rotor spins through autorotation.
Firefighters say the aircraft collides with cables belonging to an Enel cable car operating at the dam before catching fire.
Emergency crews are sent to the crash site, with the Drago helicopter also taking part in rescue and firefighting efforts.
Residents in the nearby village of Antrona report seeing the aircraft engulfed in flames, describing the scene as “a ball of fire.”
