Art World Mourns as Yayoi Kusama Dies at 97 in Tokyo
(MENAFN) Japanese avant-garde artist Yayoi Kusama, celebrated worldwide as the "polka dot queen," has died at age 97 from multiple organ failure, local media reported Thursday.
Kusama — renowned for her signature polka dot motifs, towering pumpkin sculptures, and immersive mirror-based installations — passed away Aug. 14 at a hospital in Tokyo, according to a news agency.
Over a career spanning more than six decades, Kusama emerged as a pioneering force in contemporary art, ranking among the most popular and commercially successful artists of her era. Her paintings routinely fetched millions of dollars at auction.
Born in Nagano prefecture in central Japan, Kusama relocated to the United States in 1957 before eventually settling in New York City. She returned to her home country in 1973 and went on to represent Japan at the 1993 Venice Biennale. Five years later, in 1998, she staged a major exhibition at New York's Museum of Modern Art.
Her "Infinity Mirror Rooms" — a series of immersive, kaleidoscopic installations — surged in global popularity in recent years, fueled largely by social media attention on Instagram.
Among her other celebrated works are "Pumpkin," a large-scale installation on Naoshima, an island in the Seto Inland Sea known for its art scene, and "Phantom Flowers," housed at the Matsumoto City Museum of Art.
Kusama's contributions to the art world earned her some of the highest honors from both France and Japan: the French government awarded her the Order of Arts and Letters in 2003, and the Japanese government bestowed upon her the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette in 2006.
