Malaysia's Ex-PM Ismail Sabri Charged With Hiding Assets
(MENAFN) A Malaysian court on Thursday formally charged former Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob with failing to declare his assets, according to local media reports.
The 66-year-old former premier entered a not-guilty plea to the charge, media reported.
Prosecutors allege Ismail failed to declare holdings in local currency along with nine foreign currencies, as well as five gold bars, to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.
A conviction could carry a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a fine of up to RM100,000 — roughly $25,000.
After hearing arguments from both prosecution and defense, the presiding judge ruled that Ismail could keep his passport, finding no evidence to indicate he posed a flight risk.
The case has been scheduled to return to court on Sept. 29 for its next hearing.
Ismail served as Malaysia's ninth prime minister from August 2021 to October 2022.
