Israel Withholds Remains of Hundreds of Palestinians
(MENAFN) Israel continues to retain the remains of hundreds of Palestinians killed over the decades, including women and children, according to a Palestinian watchdog group.
The figures are included in a joint statement issued by organizations working on Palestinian prisoner affairs and a campaign seeking the recovery of the remains of Palestinian and Arab victims and information about missing people.
The statement is released ahead of Palestine’s National Day for the Recovery of the Bodies of Palestinian and Arab Martyrs, highlighting the long-running issue of families being unable to recover the remains of their relatives.
“The issue of holding the bodies of martyrs and missing persons remains one of the most prominent cases linked to Israeli violations, as it deprives Palestinian families of knowing the fate of their loved ones, bidding them farewell and burying them,” the statement read.
The organizations say available information, including reports from Israeli media, indicates that Israel may still be holding the remains of around 1,700 Palestinians.
However, the campaign and other relevant institutions have so far identified 799 individuals whose remains are believed to remain in Israeli custody.
Among the most recent cases is Fathi Khazem, a commander from Jenin who was killed by Israeli forces inside his home last week. His remains have not been returned to his family, according to the statement.
