Israeli Airstrikes Hit Southern Lebanon Despite Ongoing Truce Talks
(MENAFN) Israeli warplanes launched fresh strikes across southern Lebanon in the early hours of Thursday, Lebanon's state news agency NNA reported.
Two strikes slammed into the Ali al-Taher woodland on the eastern edge of Nabatieh al-Fawqa around 6 a.m. local time (0300 GMT), according to NNA. The agency said the aircraft unleashed several high-explosive missiles, triggering a powerful blast heard throughout the surrounding area and sending thick plumes of smoke billowing into the sky.
NNA also reported that Israeli jets struck overnight in the stretch between the towns of Zawtar al-Sharqiyah and Mayfadoun.
The strikes are the latest in a sustained Israeli military campaign in Lebanon that began March 2, when Israel launched a new offensive and pushed its forces deeper into southern Lebanese territory.
The renewed violence comes despite diplomatic progress: on June 26, Lebanon and Israel reached a US-brokered framework agreement laying out a phased Israeli withdrawal from occupied Lebanese land, contingent on the deployment of the Lebanese army and the disarmament of armed factions, including Hezbollah.
Since then, the two sides have engaged in US-sponsored talks aimed at implementing the framework — including the mechanics of Israel's withdrawal and the Lebanese army's redeployment. Yet even as those negotiations continue, Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon have persisted unabated.
