Zelenskyy Honors Elon Musk with Ukraine’s Order of Freedom
(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signs a decree awarding American technology entrepreneur Elon Musk one of Ukraine’s highest state honors, the Order of Freedom.
The presidential decree, published by the Ukrainian presidential office, recognizes Musk for his “outstanding personal services in protecting human life and freedom, and developing relations between the peoples of Ukraine and the United States of America.”
Musk, who heads SpaceX, joins a group of prominent international figures who have recently received Ukrainian state honors, including European Council President Antonio Costa, French President Emmanuel Macron, and British Prime Minister Andy Burnham.
SpaceX’s Starlink satellite communications network has played an important role in supporting Ukraine’s communications infrastructure and military operations since Russia’s invasion began more than four years ago.
Ukraine introduced additional measures earlier this year to regulate the use of Starlink terminals across the country. Under the new system, only verified and registered terminals would remain operational.
“Everything else will be disconnected,” then-Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said, explaining that the initiative was being implemented in cooperation with SpaceX in response to "the use of Starlink by the Russians."
A senior Russian military official later confirmed that Starlink terminals had been disabled for a period of two weeks, while claiming that the disruption had not reduced the scale or effectiveness of Russian drone operations.
