Indonesia Earthquake Death Toll Climbs Amid Widespread Displacement
(MENAFN) The death toll from a powerful earthquake that struck Indonesia last week has risen to 105, while nearly 180,000 residents have been forced from their homes in East Nusa Tenggara province.
Berton Panjaitan, head of the communications center at Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency, says 179,037 people are now displaced following the magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck the country on August 15.
The region has also experienced thousands of aftershocks since the main earthquake. Authorities have recorded 7,787 tremors in the affected area, according to Panjaitan.
The disaster has left 105 people dead and 1,678 others injured as rescue and relief efforts continue in areas that suffered the most extensive damage.
Emergency teams are still working to deliver assistance and essential supplies to communities affected by the disaster.
The earthquake caused widespread destruction across East Nusa Tenggara, including around Labuan Bajo, a major tourist destination in the province. A total of 36,163 houses and other buildings have been damaged.
