Extreme Summer Heat Puts Swiss Farmers Under Financial Pressure

(MENAFN) Swiss farmers are confronting mounting financial difficulties after an unusually hot and dry summer creates serious shortages of animal feed and puts additional strain on livestock and agricultural production.

The effects are already being felt across the farming sector, with producers dealing with inadequate feed supplies, cattle health problems, weak milk prices, and severely dried grasslands.

Agricultural representatives warn that the full financial impact may only become clear later in the year, particularly once farmers begin exhausting the feed they have managed to store for the winter.

Jurg Iseli, a farmer and head of the Bernese Farmers' Association, says many producers are currently concentrating on immediate needs, including keeping livestock healthy and finding enough feed to get through the difficult period.

“The worst-case scenario would be if the haylofts are empty at the beginning of the year, if the silage bales are used up, and then the farmers realize what that actually means,” Iseli said.

Some farmers have already been forced to reduce their livestock numbers by selling animals, while others are strictly controlling the amount of feed available to their remaining animals.

Marie-Louise Koller, a master farmer and communications officer at a farmers' support hotline, says many producers are currently operating in “functional mode,” prioritizing livestock care, feed management, and harvesting.

She warns that deeper problems, including financial hardship, exhaustion, and growing fears about the future of farming businesses, could become more visible once the immediate challenges have passed.
