Shooting, Fire Kill Eight People in Montana Home, Including Four Kids
(MENAFN) Eight people, including four children, are killed after a shooting and subsequent fire at a residence in Billings, Montana, according to local authorities.
The victims reportedly belong to four generations of a blended family, with those killed ranging in age from a woman in her 90s to a seven-year-old girl, according to people familiar with the family.
Fundraising efforts have been established to support a man who reportedly lost his wife, children, and other relatives in the tragedy. Another campaign is also raising money for the mother of two children believed to have died in the incident.
Authorities say gunfire could be heard during an emergency call made from the residence.
When police arrived, smoke was already coming from the house, but officers encountered an active shooter at the scene. The suspect later shot himself and died after being transported to a hospital.
Because the threat remained active, firefighters were unable to immediately enter and fight the blaze. The delay allowed the fire to spread until the entire house became engulfed in flames, according to the city’s fire chief.
Police have confirmed the number of fatalities but have not yet disclosed the identities of the victims or the suspected shooter as investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding the deadly incident.
