UK Denounces Israeli Seizure of UNRWA Facility in East Jerusalem
(MENAFN) The UK government denounces the entry and reported takeover of a UN facility operated by the agency for Palestinian refugees in occupied East Jerusalem, describing the Israeli action as “outrageous.”
UK Minister for the Middle East Stephen Doughty says the forcible entry into the Qalandiya Training Center is particularly concerning because the facility has provided education and opportunities to generations of Palestinian refugees.
"The forcible entry into and reported seizure of UNRWA’s Qalandiya Training Center in Jerusalem is "outrageous" as this UN facility has offered generations of Palestinian Refugees education and opportunity," Doughty wrote on X.
"Israel must comply with its obligations & respect inviolability of UN premises," Stephen Doughty wrote on US social media company X.
The condemnation follows an Israeli operation on Tuesday in which forces removed UNRWA personnel from the center, took control of the compound, and raised the Israeli flag inside its courtyard. Israeli forces also deployed around Qalandiya refugee camp and Kafr Aqab, conducting raids, searches, and field questioning of Palestinians.
UNRWA also strongly objects to the incident, saying it “unequivocally condemns this unauthorized and deeply concerning incursion” into the training center. The agency says the presence of armed security forces inside a UN facility without UN authorization or consent is “unacceptable.”
The agency further stresses that the center is protected under international law through the privileges and immunities granted to the United Nations, adding that its protected status and inviolability must be respected.
