Denmark Joins Global Push Against Israeli Settlement Plans
(MENAFN) Denmark joins a group of countries and the European Commission in rejecting Israel’s plans to expand settlements in the occupied West Bank, according to a joint declaration issued Tuesday.
The statement, endorsed by Denmark and other international partners, condemns the Israeli government’s decision to issue construction tenders for the E1 settlement project.
“The Israeli Government's decision to publish construction tenders for the E1 settlement project is unacceptable,” the signatories said.
They warn that the proposed development could further weaken the prospects for a two-state solution by “driving a wedge through the West Bank” and disrupting the territorial continuity of Palestinian areas.
The declaration also reiterates the international community’s position that Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank violate international law, referencing the stance previously affirmed by the UN Security Council.
The signatories express additional concern over deteriorating conditions in the West Bank, pointing to “unprecedented levels of violence by settlers against civilians” as well as measures that are placing further pressure on the Palestinian economy.
Denmark, the other participating countries, and the European Commission call on Israel to abandon the planned project and halt further settlement expansion across the occupied West Bank.
