UN Committee Warns Against Dehumanizing Rhetoric Toward Lebanese Population
(MENAFN) A United Nations committee expresses concern over statements by Israeli officials threatening Lebanon with destruction on a scale similar to the devastation in Gaza, warning against language that could dehumanize Lebanese civilians and encourage further violence.
The UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) raises the concerns under its Early Warning and Urgent Action Procedure, stressing that international protections against racial discrimination remain applicable even during periods of armed conflict.
The committee says it is particularly alarmed by the reported civilian casualties, large-scale displacement, and extensive destruction caused by Israeli military operations in Lebanon. It points to airstrikes, artillery fire, and explosive weapons used in densely populated areas as contributing to the humanitarian impact.
CERD also refers to remarks by the Israeli defense minister concerning “the Shia inhabitants of 24 villages in southern Lebanon as enemies,” reportedly made while defending the complete destruction of their homes.
The UN body calls on Israel to “cease the use of rhetoric that dehumanises the population of Lebanon” and to avoid statements that “legitimises collective punishment or incites violence.”
According to figures cited by the committee, Israeli military operations in Lebanon have reportedly resulted in more than 4,300 deaths and at least 12,200 injuries.
