Netherlands Records First West Nile Virus Death in Years
(MENAFN) A person in the Dutch province of Utrecht dies after contracting West Nile virus locally, marking the Netherlands’ first reported death linked to the disease since the latest outbreak began.
The patient dies in hospital after becoming infected within the country, according to health authorities.
West Nile virus is detected in the Netherlands again last week, marking its first appearance in the country since 2020. At that time, the virus was found in a blood donor from Utrecht who had not recently traveled outside the country. It remains unclear whether that individual is the same person who has now died.
Health officials have identified cases this year in Utrecht, North Brabant, and South Holland.
Two additional patients who contracted the virus are still receiving treatment in hospital.
West Nile virus mainly affects humans, horses, and birds and is spread through mosquito bites.
Most people infected with the virus do not develop symptoms. A smaller proportion experience flu-like illness, while a very small percentage develop neurological complications.
