BMW I5 LWB Bookings Open In India: 669Km Range, Local Production And First Edition Details
BMW India has opened bookings for the first-ever i5 Long Wheelbase in India. The all-electric luxury sedan will be produced locally at BMW Group Plant Chennai. It is BMW India's first locally made electric sedan and the brand's second locally produced EV in the country. Customers can book the i5 LWB through authorised BMW dealerships or register their interest on the BMW India website.
The i5 LWB is based on the BMW 5 Series but has a longer body and an electric powertrain. BMW positions it as the only all-electric long-wheelbase sedan in its segment. It measures 5,175mm in length, 2,156mm in width and 1,520mm in height, while the wheelbase measures 3,105mm. The longer wheelbase creates more space for rear passengers and makes the car suitable for buyers who prefer to be driven.
Power comes from a single electric motor producing 268hp. BMW claims a 0-100kmph time of 6.7 seconds, so the i5 LWB still offers strong performance despite its focus on comfort. It uses an 81.6kWh high-voltage battery pack and has a claimed range of up to 669km on the MIDC cycle. The actual range will depend on factors such as driving style, traffic and weather.
BMW has also made changes for Indian road conditions. The i5 LWB comes with adaptive rear-axle air suspension and increased ground clearance. These changes are aimed at making the car more comfortable on rough roads while maintaining BMW's handling characteristics.
Alongside the standard model, BMW is also introducing the i5 LWB First Edition. Production will be limited to just 99 units. This version comes in Carbon Black Metallic with Titanium Bronze exterior accents. Inside, it features BMW Individual Silver Bronze accents, Fineline open-pored fine-wood trim and Silver Bronze inlays. The dashboard also carries a First Edition laser engraving.
The First Edition also focuses more on rear-seat comfort. It adds a rear-seat entertainment package with a tablet and tablet holder, giving passengers an additional option for entertainment during longer journeys.
The i5 LWB brings together BMW's focus on local production, electric mobility and rear-seat luxury in one model. While it retains the familiar 5 Series design and driving character, the longer wheelbase and electric powertrain put more focus on space, comfort and quiet travel. This makes it suitable for both owner-drivers and chauffeur-driven buyers.
