Measles Outbreak in Pennsylvania Claims Two Lives
(MENAFN) Pennsylvania records two measles-related deaths as an outbreak in the US state approaches 400 reported cases, marking the first fatalities linked to the disease in the state in decades.
The Pennsylvania Department of Health says both victims were unvaccinated residents of Lancaster County.
The deaths are the first measles-related fatalities recorded in the United States this year and the first reported in Pennsylvania in 35 years.
As health authorities work to contain the outbreak, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro outlines the state’s response and warns residents about misleading information surrounding vaccination.
"I know every parent wants what's best for their kids – but right now, there's a barrage of information thrown at us online, on TV and in our daily lives," he said in a statement. "It's vital for every parent to know that if you or your kids are unvaccinated, you are at an increased risk for contracting this highly-contagious virus."
The outbreak begins in April, prompting state health officials to expand vaccination efforts. More than 4,100 measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) doses are administered through temporary clinics, while medical guidance is provided to healthcare professionals who may have limited experience treating measles.
Additional pop-up vaccination clinics are also planned in the coming weeks as authorities continue efforts to curb transmission.
"As a physician, I want to make sure that people understand that the MMR vaccine is safe and provides the best protection we have against measles," Pennsylvania Secretary of Health Dr. Debra Bogen said.
