Ukrainian Soldier Recruited By Russia To Coordinate Strikes Exposed In Odesa Region
The investigation found that the serviceman came to the attention of Russian operatives while searching Telegram channels for quick ways to make money. A Russian intelligence officer contacted him there and offered cooperation in exchange for promises of“easy” money.
The suspect used a rented car to travel around Odesa and nearby areas, secretly filming Ukrainian Defense Forces' positions with his phone camera.
He also marked the coordinates of Ukrainian troop positions on Google Maps.
SSU cyber specialists detected the agent's espionage activities in advance, documented them and detained him while he was conducting additional reconnaissance near a Ukrainian Armed Forces facility.
During searches of the suspect, investigators seized a smartphone containing evidence of his work for Russia. They also found a virtual wallet that he had created in anticipation of receiving cryptocurrency transfers from the Russians.
SSU investigators charged the agent under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – high treason committed under martial law.
The suspect is being held in custody without the possibility of bail. He faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
