Geneva Police Watchdog Urges Measures to Curb Racial Profiling
(MENAFN) Geneva’s independent police mediation body is calling for institutional reforms to prevent racial profiling and improve public trust in law enforcement.
The recommendations are issued as the mediation body, which deals with disputes between police officers and members of the public, marks its tenth anniversary.
Among its proposals is the introduction of clearer procedures for dealing with complaints. It says officers should formally record a complaint whenever a member of the public insists on submitting one.
The watchdog also emphasizes the importance of how police interact with people, particularly during identity checks. Such encounters, it says, can significantly influence how individuals perceive and trust law enforcement.
Police officers are therefore encouraged to use respectful language and avoid expressions or behavior that could dehumanize members of the public.
The body also urges officers to exercise additional caution when dealing with minors. It recommends conducting interviews in suitable environments and avoiding methods that could frighten or intimidate young people.
