Employed in the Foundational Biodiversity Sciences Division of the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), Pretoria as Plant Taxonomist and South African National Plant Checklist Coordinator. Curates Asphodelaceae, Lycopodiophyta and Pteridophyta collections of the National Herbarium (PRE). Extraordinary lecturer at the Department of Plant & Soil Sciences, University of Pretoria. Managed the Aloes of the World Project. Coordinated SANBI's involvement in the African Plant Checklist & Database in collaboration with CJB Genéva, Switzerland, and was awarded the Allen Dyer Prize for this in 2005.

Graduated from the University of Pretoria (PhD in Plant Taxonomy, 2015), where several awards were received.

National Research Foundation rating: C3: 2018-2023; C2: 2025-2030.

Research interests are in taxonomy, nomenclature, and floristics of Asphodelaceae (especially Alooideae) and southern African Lycopodiophyta and Pteridophyta.

Served on the National Committee of the Fern Society of Southern Africa as Pteridoforum Editor (2000-2010); Catalogue of Life Species List Governance Working Group (2024-2025). Chairs the South African National Plant Checklist Committee. Currently serves on the SANBI Biodiversity Information Mangement Cross-functional Steering Committee (since 2014), World Flora Online Taxonomic Working Group (since 2016) and the Geographical Distribution Task Force (since 2024); IAPT Nomenclature Committee for Vascular Plants (since 2013) and serves as their representative on the IAPT Registration Committee (since 2024); Editorial Committee of the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (Madrid Code; since 2024); Special Purpose Committee on Types & Typification (since 2025); Editorial Board of Flowering Plants of Africa (since 2015); as Associate Editor: Nomenclatural Review Board for African Biodiversity & Conservation (since 2021); Associate Editor for Novon (since 2016); Section Editor: African Flora for Phytotaxa (since 2017); and Nomenclature Specialist to the CITES Plants Committee (since 2019).
