HYDERABAD, Aug 26 (NNN) -- South Asian leaders have called on Muslims to draw guidance from the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad to foster justice, compassion, tolerance and social harmony as they marked Mawlid, the anniversary of his birth.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said the Prophet's advent opened a new horizon of truth and light for humanity, while his teachings have become an eternal guide and model for mankind.

"The Prophet (peace be upon him) called people towards Tawhid (the absolute oneness of God) and taught them truth, justice, equality, brotherhood, humanity and peace," Tarique said on Tuesday.

Bangladesh President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir highlighted the relevance of the Prophet's final sermon in today's world, saying it articulated the values of human dignity, equality, brotherhood, justice and mutual rights, according to a Bangladesh state media report.

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in a message emphasised Islam's injunctions against social evils.

"The Prophet's vision provides us with abundant guidance to realise our aspiration of creating a country governed by the rule of law, justice and equal treatment for all, and a society founded on coexistence and harmony," he said.

"Islam rejects all forms of vice that corrupt both the inner purity of the individual and the moral fabric of society," Dissanayake said.

Indian President Droupadi Murmu in her message said the Prophet's teachings "inspire us to follow the path of pious conduct and dutifulness" in creating a better India.

"May the noble ideals of Prophet Muhammad inspire us to contribute actively towards building an inclusive and developed India," she said.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the Prophet's teachings remain an "eternal source of guidance for all humanity -- calling us towards compassion, justice, tolerance, unity and service to others."
