ICC President Urges States to Protect Court from Dismantling
(MENAFN) International Criminal Court President Tomoko Akane rejects efforts by the US administration to undermine and dismantle the Hague-based tribunal, urging member states to stand behind the institution and its work.
Speaking during a virtual press conference, Akane emphasizes the importance of preserving the court and says: “The ICC must not be dismantled,” according to reports.
Akane, the first Japanese national to lead the court, oversees an institution that has issued an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over allegations involving the use of starvation as a method of warfare and the deliberate targeting of civilians in Gaza.
Highlighting the court’s role in pursuing accountability for serious international crimes, Akane says, "For victims of the most serious international crimes, the ICC is their last hope."
The court faces strong opposition from US officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who describes it as a “corrupt and fatally politicized supranational court that has maliciously abused its authority and exceeded its mandate.”
“We will not tolerate its assault on state sovereignty,” Rubio said last week after the US imposed sanctions on Akane and ICC prosecutor Abdoulaye Seye.
Akane rejects the accusations against the court and says she has never participated in the conduct alleged by the US government. “The United States has long accused the ICC of being a corrupt organization that has abused its power and taken resources from sovereign states, but I have never been involved in any such conduct.”
She further questions the basis for the sanctions, stating: “I have no reason to incur US sanctions,” Akane told the online news conference.
