Israel Expands Presence at Seized UNRWA Training Center in Jerusalem
(MENAFN) Israeli forces increase their presence at a vocational training facility operated by the UN agency for Palestinian refugees in occupied East Jerusalem, one day after taking control of the compound, according to local authorities.
Israeli personnel remain deployed throughout the Qalandia Vocational Training Center, with troops being rotated and additional forces brought in overnight and into Wednesday, the Jerusalem Governorate says.
The Jerusalem municipality has also sent technical teams to the site and begun what it describes as “maintenance and renovation” work. The efforts are reportedly part of preparations to use the location for students under a plan to establish a municipal education complex there.
The latest actions follow an operation a day earlier in which Israeli forces removed employees from the UNRWA facility, took control of the compound, and raised the Israeli flag inside its courtyard.
Israeli forces also strengthened their deployment around the nearby Qalandia refugee camp and Kafr Aqab, where they conducted raids, searches, and on-site questioning of Palestinians.
National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir participated in the operation and declared there was “no place for the agency in Jerusalem and Israel.”
UNRWA has previously warned about plans targeting the training center, which provides vocational education to hundreds of Palestinian students. The agency says carrying out the proposed municipal project would involve demolishing most of the existing facility.
