Russia, Syria Advance Plans for Military Base Reorganization
(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin and Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa discuss the future of Russia’s military presence in Syria during a phone conversation, with particular attention given to plans concerning the Hmeimim and Tartus facilities.
The two leaders review the state of relations between Moscow and Damascus and discuss opportunities to expand cooperation in political, economic, trade, humanitarian, and other fields. They also reaffirm their interest in maintaining political dialogue and strengthening bilateral ties.
During their discussion on developments inside Syria, Putin reiterates his “principled position in support of the unity, territorial integrity, and sovereignty” of the country. He also expresses support for efforts aimed at establishing “creation of conditions for long-term normalization and post-conflict reconstruction.”
The Kremlin says both sides underline the significance of a memorandum of understanding signed on Aug. 9 concerning the restructuring of the Hmeimim Air Base and the Tartus Logistics Facility. The presidents also agree to maintain communication and continue discussions through various levels of engagement.
The Syrian presidency says the call also focuses on bilateral relations and possible ways to expand cooperation in areas of shared interest.
According to the presidency, Putin again affirms Moscow’s backing for Syria’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. He also stresses Russia’s opposition to Israeli attacks and actions that it says violate and weaken Syrian sovereignty.
