Flash Floods, Landslides Leave Hundreds Dead, Missing at Nepal-China Border

(MENAFN) Devastating flash floods and landslides along the Nepal-China border have left at least 160 people dead, while more than 680 tourists, travelers, security personnel, workers, and residents remain missing across the affected areas, according to officials.

Nepalese authorities report that rescue teams have recovered 157 bodies so far, while 54 people have been brought to safety from regions hit by the floods.

Across the border, Chinese state media reports that three people have died and 265 others remain unaccounted for in southern Tibet.

Figures released by the Nepalese Prime Minister’s Office indicate that dozens of security personnel are among those missing, including army members, police officers, and armed police personnel. Civilian workers involved in hydropower projects are also reported missing.

The authorities initially estimated that 484 tourists and travelers were unaccounted for, including both foreign visitors and Nepali nationals.

The disaster has also caused extensive damage to infrastructure. Numerous bridges have been destroyed, while roads covering a considerable distance have been damaged. Several hydropower facilities have likewise been affected, according to preliminary government assessments.

Around 200 trucks are also reported to have been swept away by the floodwaters.

“Due to the flood, a large number of hydropower projects, government offices, and road facilities were erased,” Nepalese Foreign Minister Sishir Khanal said during a parliamentary briefing on the disaster.
