6 Dead, 3 Injured In Poonch Road Accident

(MENAFN- Kashmir Observer) Srinagar- Six people, including two women, were killed and three others injured when a vehicle veered off the road and plunged into a ditch in the Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, officials said.

The accident occurred around 5.30 pm in Seri Chouhana village in the Sheldhar area of Surankote when the driver of a Maruti Eeco lost control of the vehicle while it was heading towards the village, they said.

“An unfortunate accident occurred this evening, resulting in on-the-spot death of six persons and injuries to three others,” Poonch Deputy Commissioner Ashok Kumar Sharma said.

A rescue operation was launched immediately and the injured were rushed to the district hospital, officials said.

The deceased were identified as Mohd Shafiq (32), Nazakat Hussain (34), Sheraz Ahmed (30), Mohd Fareed (21), Musarat Naz (19) and Zulfat Bi (25).

The injured were identified as five-year-old Irshan Ahmed, Mohd Amin (30) and Tahir Ahmed (25). The child, who was critically injured, was referred to Government Medical College hospital for specialised treatment.

Chief Medical Officer, Poonch, Dr Pervez Khan said information about the accident was received through the Police Control Room, following which the 108 ambulance service, additional ambulances and other emergency resources were dispatched to the site.

The bodies of the six deceased, including four men and two women, were brought to the district hospital, he said.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed anguish over the loss of lives and directed the district administration to provide immediate assistance to the affected families.

“Pained by the loss of lives in a tragic road accident in Poonch. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured. Have directed the District Administration to ensure immediate assistance is provided to those affected,” Sinha said in a post on X.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also expressed deep grief over the accident and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families.

The Chief Minister directed the authorities to ensure the best possible medical care for the injured, while the Chief Minister's Office said it was in constant touch with the concerned authorities to extend all possible assistance.
