Desertification Affects Large Share of Greece
(MENAFN) A significant portion of Greece faces the effects of desertification, with a recent report indicating that nearly half of the country's population lives in areas impacted by the phenomenon.
According to the findings, Greece ranks among the European countries most severely affected by desertification, which is increasingly viewed as both an environmental and socioeconomic challenge across the continent.
The report shows that 47% of Greece’s population resides in areas directly affected by desertification, placing the country behind only the Greek Cypriot Administration in terms of the proportion of people exposed to its impact.
It also reveals that a large part of Greece's land displays signs of degradation. Around 72.74% of the country's territory records at least one indicator of land deterioration, compared with 56.4% across the European Union.
More than one-third of Greece’s total land area is affected by desertification, placing the country among the European states with the largest share of territory exposed to the problem.
Spain records the highest proportion of land affected, followed by Cyprus, while Greece ranks next, ahead of Portugal.
