Azerbaijan President Praises Sabah FK After Champions League Qualification

(MENAFN) Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev congratulates Sabah FK after the club secures a place in the league phase of the UEFA Champions League following its aggregate win against Israel's Hapoel Be'er Sheva.

In a message posted on the US-based social media platform X, Aliyev describes the achievement of the relatively young club as a “matter of special joy and pride.”

“The fact that our clubs have earned the right to compete in the league phase of the world's strongest club tournament for the second consecutive year is another vivid indicator of Azerbaijan's progress in all fields and of the country's standing as a sporting nation,” Aliyev said.

Sabah books its place in the competition after claiming a dramatic 5-2 victory following extra time against Hapoel Be'er Sheva on Tuesday, overturning a 2-1 defeat from the first leg of the Champions League playoff.

The achievement makes Sabah the second club from Azerbaijan to reach the main stage of the competition, following Qarabag FK.

Based in Masazir, north of Baku, the club was established in 2017 and captured its first Azerbaijani Premier League title last season under Lithuanian coach Valdas Dambrauskas.

Sabah begins its Champions League campaign in the first round of the Champions Path qualifying route. On its way to the league phase, the team eliminates the defending champions of Wales, Finland, and Denmark before defeating Hapoel Be'er Sheva in the playoff round.
