Immigration Authorities Release Sailor’s Father After Detention
(MENAFN) The father of a US sailor serving aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier has been released from federal custody after being detained by immigration authorities over the weekend, according to his family.
“Luis has been released back to our family,” the Aviles family said through sailor Joshua Aviles’ social media account.
The family thanked members of the public for their support during the incident and asked for privacy while waiting for Joshua to return home after spending more than nine months deployed.
Luis Manuel Aviles, a Nicaraguan national who has lived in the United States for about two decades, was taken into custody Saturday in Key West, Florida.
His son said his father has a work permit and a Social Security card. However, the Department of Homeland Security said those documents do not provide lawful immigration status. The agency said Aviles was arrested after entering the United States illegally.
The USS Abraham Lincoln is currently heading back to the United States after an extended deployment in the Middle East.
