Bangladesh Moves to Acquire Chinese Fighter Jets
(MENAFN) Bangladesh is taking steps toward acquiring Chinese-made J-10CE multirole fighter aircraft as part of a broader effort to upgrade the capabilities of its Air Force, according to a government adviser.
Prime Minister’s Information Adviser Zahed Ur Rahman says a draft agreement has been prepared covering the purchase of J-10CE combat aircraft along with attack helicopters.
The proposed deal has been forwarded to the Armed Forces Division and the relevant government ministries for consideration and approval, Rahman tells reporters in Dhaka.
He adds that Bangladesh is also pursuing the acquisition of fourth-generation multirole combat aircraft, attack helicopters, VIP helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicle systems as part of its military modernization plans.
According to Rahman, the government hopes to complete the purchases during the current fiscal year. If adequate funding is not available, the acquisitions could instead be carried out during the following financial year.
Rahman points to the reported performance of Chinese J-10 aircraft during the India-Pakistan conflict as one of the factors influencing Bangladesh’s interest in the aircraft.
“There is a recent real experience in combat situations. When the war was going on in India-Pakistan, India's Rafale was shot down by the Chinese J-10. This information is now established information,” he said.
