Colombia Shifts Peace Stations to Centralized Programming
(MENAFN) The Colombian government has halted regional and informational broadcasts on 20 “Peace Stations” established as part of the country’s peace agreement with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), according to reports.
Since Aug. 18, the stations have stopped airing locally focused news, cultural material and educational programs. Instead, they have been broadcasting centrally produced music programming from Bogota.
The radio network was established under the peace accord to serve communities in regions that were heavily affected by decades of armed conflict. Its programming was designed around the needs of local populations, with particular attention given to peacebuilding, reconciliation and the implementation of the agreement.
The network reached full implementation in December 2024, making it the only element of the peace accord to have been completely carried out, according to reports.
The agreement was signed in November 2016 following four years of negotiations between the Colombian government and the FARC. It was intended to bring an end to more than five decades of armed conflict and introduced measures covering rural development, political participation, victims’ rights and the reintegration of former combatants.
The latest suspension was directed by the new leadership of Inravision, Colombia’s public media system. The organization says it plans to assess the programming carried by the Peace Stations as well as other decentralized radio frequencies.
