Syria Condemns Israeli Visit to Buffer Zone
(MENAFN) Syria strongly criticizes Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz's entry into Syrian territory, describing the move as a violation of the country's sovereignty and a deliberate provocation.
The Syrian Foreign Ministry issues its response after Katz visits a buffer zone that Israeli forces took control of last year. The visit takes place shortly after Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani and Israeli intelligence chief Roman Gofman hold a meeting in Jordan that is reportedly intended to ease tensions.
In its statement, the ministry condemns the “illegal entry of the Israeli defense minister … in flagrant violation of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity."
It says the visit represents a “clear provocation, a violation of international law and the UN Charter, and a breach of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement” between Syria and Israel.
Damascus urges the international community to pressure Israel to end what it describes as continuing violations and withdraw from Syrian land under Israeli occupation.
Israeli forces took control of the buffer zone last year, a step that Syrian authorities say violates the disengagement agreement established between the two countries in 1974.
Following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government in late 2024, Israel declares the agreement invalid and moves into the buffer zone along with other strategic locations, including the Syrian side of Mount Hermon.
