German Groups Push for Faster Economic Reforms

(MENAFN) German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is urging his coalition government to move more quickly on economic reforms as pressure grows from business and labor organizations calling for decisive steps to strengthen the country’s economy and prevent further industrial job cuts.

The call comes as ministers gather for a two-day Cabinet retreat at Schloss Neuhardenberg in Brandenburg, where discussions focus on boosting growth, encouraging innovation and improving Germany’s competitiveness.

“We want to emerge from the weakness in economic growth. We want to enable our economy to achieve growth and employment again,” Merz said.

During the meeting, the government is expected to engage with representatives from industry, technology firms, start-ups and skilled trades as it seeks input on measures aimed at improving economic conditions.

“There is no reason at all to underestimate ourselves,” Merz said, pointing to Germany’s industrial base, small and medium-sized enterprises, skilled trades and research capabilities.

Merz said Germany has the potential to remain competitive internationally and even become an example for others, but emphasized that the government must establish the right environment for businesses and workers to succeed.

He also acknowledged that the public expects the government to take meaningful action and said preparations for decisions scheduled for the rest of the year will be accelerated.
