German Business Confidence Rises for Second Month
(MENAFN) German business sentiment strengthened in August as companies expressed greater satisfaction with current conditions and raised their outlook for the months ahead, the ifo Institute reported Tuesday.
The Munich-based institute's Business Climate Index climbed to 88.8 points in August, up from 86.7 points the previous month.
A closer look at the components shows the gauge measuring current business conditions rose to 88.5 points from 86.5 points, while the forward-looking expectations indicator advanced to 89.1 points from 86.8 points.
Despite yet another uptick in energy prices, the German economy is displaying signs of recovery as business uncertainty continues to fade, according to the ifo Institute.
Within manufacturing, the business climate index rose noticeably, with managers rating their current situation as significantly improved and anticipating higher production over the coming three months.
The services sector likewise saw sentiment brighten, buoyed by improved expectations — though transportation and logistics firms continued to navigate a tough operating environment.
Trade-related indicators also picked up, driven by stronger satisfaction among retailers and a marked improvement in wholesale sentiment.
In construction, the index edged higher on the back of noticeably less pessimistic expectations, even though firms judged their current business conditions to be slightly weaker.
