Zelenskyy Says Pressure on Russia Must Increase to Bring Peace Talks
(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says the war must become costly enough for Russia to create pressure for negotiations and encourage Moscow to return to peace talks.
Speaking after a Coalition of the Willing summit in Kyiv, Zelenskyy estimates that Russia is spending about €330 billion ($385 billion) on the ongoing conflict, while Ukraine has spent around €130 billion ($152 billion). He does not specify the period covered by those figures but says Kyiv is also facing a funding gap of approximately €27 billion ($31.5 billion).
Zelenskyy argues that increasing the costs of the conflict could influence Russian society to put pressure on President Vladimir Putin to pursue negotiations.
“I think this is one of the instruments (of) how to push Putin to negotiations,” he said. “We need the same competitive number (of drones), not of money, because they have two times more money for today.”
He also addresses the situation in the Black Sea, saying Russia is attempting to prevent maritime traffic from operating through Ukraine’s corridor but has not succeeded in completely shutting it down.
“Today there is no total blockade, there is an attempt at a total blockade, but three to four ships a day enter and leave Greater Odesa, despite the fact that they are attacking the port infrastructure,” he said.
Zelenskyy’s comments highlight Kyiv’s continued focus on increasing military and economic pressure on Moscow while maintaining access to vital maritime routes and seeking conditions that could eventually bring Russia to the negotiating table.
