Merz Vows to Hold Hybrid Attack Perpetrators Accountable

(MENAFN) German Chancellor Friedrich Merz says those responsible for hybrid attacks against Germany will face consequences, as authorities examine growing security threats targeting the country.

Speaking ahead of a two-day Cabinet retreat near Berlin, Merz points to the recent attempted drone attack at Leipzig Airport as evidence of the increasingly serious challenges facing Germany.

“Attackers are becoming increasingly unscrupulous, willing to accept even severe property damage, injuries, and deaths,” Merz said.

He says investigations into the Leipzig incident are still underway and that the government is expected to provide further findings once the inquiry progresses.

“The German government will make perpetrators of hybrid attacks pay a price. They will be held accountable,” he said, adding that newly proposed legislation designed to strengthen Germany’s intelligence services will further improve the country’s security capabilities.

Merz also insists that threats against Germany will not weaken Berlin’s commitment to supporting Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia.

“We are staying the course,” he said. “Germany will maintain its support for Ukraine for the long haul. We are currently Ukraine’s strongest supporter — not to prolong the war, but to force peace talks.”

The chancellor’s remarks underline Germany’s determination to strengthen its defenses against emerging security threats while maintaining its long-term backing for Ukraine and efforts to push the conflict toward negotiations.
