China, India Hold 25th Round of Border Talks in Beijing
(MENAFN) Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Tuesday that China and India must learn from history and properly position their long-running boundary dispute within the broader bilateral relationship, urging both sides to keep "moving forward without stagnating, backtracking or veering off course."
Wang delivered the remarks during the 25th round of special representative talks on the boundary question, held in Beijing, according to a statement from China's Foreign Ministry. Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval headed the Indian delegation.
Wang framed healthy, stable ties between the two nations as serving the core interests of both populations, adding that the relationship carries weight far beyond the bilateral sphere, with global and strategic implications. He said both governments are following through on commitments made at earlier special representatives' meetings, noting that institutionalized exchanges and cooperation are gradually picking back up, alongside continued efforts to preserve calm along the border.
India's side offered a similarly upbeat account, describing a "positive" review of the "ongoing momentum" in relations between the two countries. "They discussed ways to further expand bilateral cooperation, maintain stability and ensure peace and tranquility in the border areas, and make progress on boundary delimitation, while sustaining the ongoing work on transboundary cooperation," the Indian Embassy in Beijing said in a post on X.
China's Foreign Ministry characterized the discussions as comprehensive, in-depth, friendly and candid. Separately, Doval also sat down with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng while in Beijing.
The two countries share an undemarcated border stretching roughly 3,800 kilometers (2,400 miles) that remains disputed in numerous stretches.
The talks arrive just weeks before New Delhi is due to host a BRICS leaders' summit. It remains unclear whether Chinese President Xi Jinping will attend — his last trip to India came in 2019.
