Trump Floats Renaming Lake Ontario as Lake America
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump says his administration is considering giving Lake Ontario a new name, suggesting it could become “Lake America” as trade tensions between the United States and Canada intensify.
Trump makes the proposal on his Truth Social platform, linking the possible name change to his view that Washington no longer expects significant trade with Ontario.
“The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in that we don’t expect to doing much business with Ontario any longer,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
Lake Ontario stretches between Canada’s Ontario province and New York state, with the international border passing directly through the lake.
The latest remarks come after Trump sharply criticized Canada, saying the country is difficult to deal with and arguing that the United States does not depend on its northern neighbor.
“Among the worst Nations in the World to deal with. They feel entitled yet WE DON'T NEED CANADA, THEY NEED US.”
Trade relations have deteriorated further following unsuccessful negotiations between the two countries. A 50% US tariff on Canadian imports takes effect Saturday, while Trump also announces plans for another 50% tariff covering Canadian automobiles, trucks and auto parts beginning Jan. 1, 2027.
The failed negotiations also trigger a public dispute between Trump and Ontario Premier Doug Ford. Ford responds to Trump’s criticism by calling him a “dictator” and the “king of bankruptcies.”
The exchange adds to growing tensions between Washington and Canadian officials as both sides remain divided over trade and tariffs.
