Bangladesh Moves to Buy Chinese J-10CE Jets in Air Force Overhaul
(MENAFN) Bangladesh is advancing plans to acquire Chinese-made J-10CE multirole fighter jets as part of a broader push to modernize its Air Force, a government adviser said Tuesday.
Prime Minister's Information Adviser Zahed Ur Rahman told reporters in Dhaka that a draft agreement covering the procurement of J-10CE combat aircraft and attack helicopters has already been drawn up and forwarded to the Armed Forces Division and relevant ministries for approval.
Rahman said the country is also in the process of acquiring additional fourth-generation multirole combat aircraft, attack helicopters, VIP helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicle systems. He indicated the purchases would go through either during the current fiscal year or, should funding fall short, in the following financial year.
Explaining the rationale behind the shift toward Chinese hardware, Rahman pointed to the reported battlefield performance of J-10 jets during the recent India-Pakistan conflict. "There is a recent real experience in combat situations. When the war was going on in India-Pakistan, India's Rafale was shot down by the Chinese J-10. This information is now established information," he said.
He added that Chinese fighter jets also come at a lower cost than comparable aircraft such as the Rafale and Eurofighter Typhoon.
The procurement plan was first floated in October 2025 under the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, which had proposed buying 20 Chinese-made fighter jets in a deal valued at roughly $2.2 billion.
Bangladesh's Air Force currently fields around 212 aircraft in total, including 44 fighter jets — 36 of which are Chinese-made F-7s.
