AI-Powered Pro-Kremlin Propaganda Network Tied to Israeli Think Tank
(MENAFN) A Russian disinformation operation that harnessed artificial intelligence to push anti-Western, pro-Kremlin narratives has been linked to an Israel-based think tank, a German news magazine reported Tuesday.
According to the magazine, accounts flagged by security teams at OpenAI used ChatGPT to churn out propaganda aimed primarily at Telegram channels, while simultaneously promoting the International Burke Institute — an organization that bills itself as an "expert community" founded in 2025 and headquartered in Israel.
The news magazine reported that online evidence ties the institute to Dor Moriah, a charity run by Israelis with Russian and Ukrainian roots that is alleged to have connections to the Russian Foreign Ministry. Neither the International Burke Institute nor Dor Moriah responded to the magazine's requests for comment.
OpenAI confirmed the takedown in a statement Tuesday, saying it had banned a network of Russian-origin accounts engaged in covert influence campaigns spanning multiple languages. "We recently banned a cluster of ChatGPT accounts originating in Russia that were being used to promote the International Burke Institute," the company said.
Beyond boosting the think tank, the banned accounts were also used to produce content for several Telegram channels, OpenAI said. One such channel, Lahme Ente (Lame Duck), counts roughly 20,000 subscribers and publishes material critical of the EU, the German government, and Western backing for Ukraine, according to the news magazine.
Among the channel's recent headlines, the magazine cited "What Is NATO Hiding From Us?" and "Europe's Inevitable Downfall."
