Sinaloa Names Interim Governor After Rocha Moya Takes Indefinite Leave
(MENAFN) Sinaloa's state Congress on Tuesday named Graciela Dominguez Nava as interim governor, filling the vacancy left by Ruben Rocha Moya's indefinite leave of absence, according to media reports.
Dominguez previously headed Sinaloa's Secretary of Public Education and Culture from 2021 to 2024 under Rocha Moya and currently serves as a federal lawmaker on leave from that post.
Her appointment follows Rocha Moya's decision Saturday to step away indefinitely — a move that came just two days after he resumed his duties as governor following a 112-day absence.
That return had already drawn sharp criticism from President Claudia Sheinbaum and Morena, Mexico's ruling party, following allegations from US authorities linking Rocha Moya to drug trafficking. Rocha Moya has denied the allegations.
Speaking Tuesday, Sheinbaum said she did not know Dominguez personally but described her as an honest woman with a long record of championing social justice and the welfare of Sinaloa residents.
"Support her in whatever she needs for the good of the people of Sinaloa and so that she can finish this period well," Sheinbaum said, according to media reports.
Dominguez has been a member of Morena since 2013, when she left the Democratic Revolution Party (PRD), and has held both state and federal legislative positions.
She had previously been floated as a possible Morena contender for Sinaloa's 2027 gubernatorial race — a path now closed off, according to media reports, since her interim appointment disqualifies her from that bid.
The leadership change comes as Sinaloa continues to grapple with a wave of violence stemming from a power struggle between rival factions within the Sinaloa Cartel. The state has logged thousands of homicides since the conflict broke out in September 2024, intensifying pressure on officials to shore up security.
