Yemen Forces Kill 14 Houthi Fighters in Hodeidah Strikes
(MENAFN) Pro-government forces in Yemen reported Tuesday evening that strikes on Houthi positions south of the Red Sea port city of Hodeidah had killed 14 members of the group.
A statement from the media office of the government-aligned National Resistance Forces said the operation had "accurately hit their targets." The Houthis had not responded to the claims as of Tuesday evening.
The strikes came on the same day Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council signed off on additional "deterrence" measures against the Houthis, reaffirming its commitment to restoring state institutions and ending the group's grip on parts of the country.
The decision was made during a full council meeting in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, according to Yemen's state-run news agency.
Discussions at the meeting centered on "developments in the military, security and economic situations, as well as the state's strategic options in confronting the ongoing escalation by the Houthi militias, as part of efforts to restore state institutions and end the coup."
The council added: "The state is continuing efforts to restore its institutions, assert its authority over all its national territory, and end the humanitarian suffering caused by the Iranian-backed Houthi terrorist militias."
The escalation marks a break from the relative stability Yemen had experienced since 2022, following years of conflict between government forces and the Houthis, who overran large swaths of the country — including the capital, Sanaa — back in 2014.
Clashes reignited early last month across multiple fronts, including Marib in central Yemen, Al-Jawf in the north, and Al-Dhale and Taiz in the southwest.
A Saudi-led coalition continues to back Yemen's Aden-based government and its military, while Iran stands accused of arming and supporting the Houthis, who declared a maritime blockade of Saudi Arabia in July.
Since Israel launched its war in the Gaza Strip in late 2023, the Houthis have steadily expanded their role in regional conflict, striking Israel directly and targeting Israel-linked shipping vessels in the Red Sea.
