Syrian Airlines Expands European Flight Network
(MENAFN) Syrian Airlines is set to introduce regular direct services from Damascus to Vienna and Copenhagen beginning Sept. 21, as Syria moves to expand its international air connections, according to the country’s civil aviation authority.
Omar al-Hosari, head of Syria’s General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport, says the new routes form part of a broader effort to increase the national carrier’s presence abroad and improve transportation links between Syria and European destinations.
Hosari explains that authorities are pursuing two objectives at the same time: broadening Syrian Airlines’ regional and international network while encouraging airlines from Arab countries and elsewhere to establish services to Syrian airports.
He adds that further destinations for Syrian Airlines are expected to be announced in the coming period. Authorities also anticipate additional foreign carriers entering the Syrian market and the introduction of more routes connecting Syria with international destinations.
The latest announcement follows the recent restoration of direct air travel between Syria and Germany after an interruption lasting roughly 14 years.
A Berlin Brandenburg Airport flight arrives at Damascus International Airport on Aug. 11, operated by German airline Sundair, marking the return of direct services between the German and Syrian capitals.
