German Islamic Council Chief Slams AfD's Youth Headscarf Ban Push
(MENAFN) Burhan Kesici, who chairs the Islamic Council of Germany, pushed back Tuesday against a proposal from the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party calling for a ban on headscarves worn by girls under 14.
Kesici was responding directly to the AfD's push to introduce such a ban nationwide.
Speaking to media, Kesici stressed that religious freedom is enshrined in Germany's constitution, arguing that the AfD's proposal reflects a broader strategy of excluding Muslims from public life.
He further suggested the timing of the debate may be tied to upcoming state elections, warning that turning Muslims into a political target risks deepening divisions within German society.
The AfD's parliamentary group in the Bundestag has called on Germany to adopt a model similar to Austria's, which prohibits children from wearing headscarves in state-run educational institutions.
